Which validation level do you need?

All certificates encrypt traffic. The difference is how much the certificate authority verifies about you.

Why paid SSL?

Encryption is free. Trust is not.

Every SSL certificate encrypts traffic. Paid certificates add validation, warranty and trust signals that free SSL cannot.

Validation vs encryption

Every SSL certificate encrypts traffic. But validation — proving who you are — is what builds trust. Free SSL proves you control the domain; paid SSL proves who your business is.

Organisation verification

OV and EV certificates require business verification by the certificate authority. Your company name appears in the certificate, visible to visitors who check.

Warranty protection

Paid SSL includes a warranty — the CA pays your visitors if a certificate is mis-issued. Free SSL has no warranty. For e-commerce, this matters.

Trust signals

EV certificates display your company name in the browser. OV certificates carry a site seal. These signals reduce cart abandonment and increase conversions.

Wildcard coverage

A wildcard certificate secures your domain and unlimited subdomains (*.yourdomain.com). Free SSL is per-subdomain — wildcard saves time and money at scale.

Support & SLA

Paid certificates include CA support and issuance SLAs. If something goes wrong, you have a named contact — not a community forum.

SSL FAQ

SSL certificate questions, answered

Free vs paid, validation levels, wildcards and warranties.

For most websites — blogs, brochures, small stores — free Let's Encrypt SSL is sufficient. It provides the same encryption as paid certificates and triggers the browser padlock. You need a paid certificate when you want organisation validation (your company name in the cert), a warranty, a site seal, or wildcard coverage for many subdomains.
